Description
The best way to learn a tabletop roleplaying game is to play it.
Rulebooks are important, but reading about initiative, skill rolls, boons and banes is very different from actually using those rules at the table. The Trouble at Goldcrest Keep was created with that idea in mind: instead of asking new players to learn Dragonbane before the adventure begins, this short dungeon teaches the game as they play.
You also need a copy of the Dragonbane Rulebook or Core Set in order to play this adventure.
The Dawnstone of Bellweather has been stolen by a group of questionably competent treasure hunters, and the young squire who followed them into the abandoned Goldcrest Keep has not returned. The player characters must enter the ruins, track down the thieves, recover the missing relic, and discover why something large—and very metallic—has suddenly begun moving through the ancient fortress.
Designed as a seven-area introductory dungeon, each part of Goldcrest Keep introduces another piece of Dragonbane’s rules at the moment it becomes useful. Players begin with basic skill rolls before naturally encountering boons and banes, pushing rolls, conditions, initiative, attacks, parrying and dodging, opposed rolls, movement, recovery, Willpower Points, heroic abilities, and finally Dragonbane’s distinctive monster rules. Short tutorial notes give the GM the information needed to explain each concept without interrupting the adventure with a lengthy rules lecture.
The adventure is built in the style of a traditional Dragonbane dungeon, with concise room descriptions, clearly marked interactive elements, multiple solutions to obstacles, plenty of opportunities for player creativity, and enough mirth mixed with the mayhem to make Goldcrest Keep feel at home in Dragonbane. Failure creates new complications rather than dead ends, and the final encounter can be solved with clever play just as easily as brute force.
The Trouble at Goldcrest Keep includes the complete adventure, GM-facing tutorial notes, descriptive text for each major location, a simple dungeon map for easy reference or recreation in a VTT, and an original Dragonbane monster presented with a full stat block and D6 Monster Attack table.
Whether everyone at the table is completely new to Dragonbane or an experienced GM simply wants an easy adventure for introducing new players, The Trouble at Goldcrest Keep is designed put dice in everyone’s hands, and start playing.
